This hospital, meant to serve the most disenfranchised, was turned into a playground of greed, where money intended for improving lives was diverted to fill the pockets of the corrupt. Babita was investigating this corruption, and for her dedication to the truth, she was met with bullets—bullets fired by those determined to preserve their criminal fiefdoms.

Her story echoes in my heart because it mirrors my own loss. My brother, Ralph Kanyane, a councillor in Mogalakwena Municipality, was also murdered in cold blood. He, too, was investigating the cancerous corruption infecting tender processes—corruption that robs communities of basic services and deepens the trenches of poverty. He was shot in broad daylight, in the middle of Mokopane town. Ralph, like Babita, stood against the monstrous system, and the system fought back with deadly force.

But these murders, these tragedies, will not be in vain.

We are facing an entrenched enemy—a system so vast and corrupt that it cannot be confronted directly. The public service has become a grotesque parody of its purpose, transformed into a domain for self-serving managers and cronies. These senior managers, intoxicated by power and self-preservation, hire based on loyalty rather than competence. They create sanitized reports to paint illusions of progress while real communities are left abandoned, their voices drowned out by false metrics and empty promises.

This is not just mismanagement. This is betrayal.
